Children’s Dyslexia Center Holds a Memorable Recognition Ceremony

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Rhode Island Director Golda Middagh Macomber welcomed approximately 100 people to this first in-person Recognition Ceremony since 2018.

Honoring the 12 graduating students were their parents, tutors, members of the Board of Governors, members of the Freemason family, and the evening’s speakers.

The keynote speaker, Zachary Marcotte, an alumnus of the Rhode Island Children’s Dyslexia Center, spoke of how difficult life was for him not being able to read and learn until he attended tutoring at the center. Through the tutoring program he learned the tools he needed to meet with success in school. After graduating from a post-secondary technical school, he was able to obtain a job that he loves, living with confidence and success.

Desmond Taggart, the father of one of the graduating students, spoke from a parent’s perspective on the heartache of having a child who is dyslexic, and how his child struggled to learn. Once his child came to the center he began to bloom with confidence because of his newly acquired reading abilities, becoming one of the top students in his class.

The tutors were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the students. The last few years have been difficult for the children, as well as the tutors, who had to adapt their tutoring to remote sessions at times. With perseverance, they succeeded!

One of our tutors, Patricia Sharman, is retiring from her role as a tutor after tutoring for 20 years. MW Steven E. Smith, 33°, recognized the fine work of the tutors and students as well as the dedication of the director and board members. He presented a check from the Valley of Providence with the promise of the Valley’s continued support of the Children’s Dyslexia Center. The evening left us feeling hopeful knowing the children had acquired the skills necessary for their continued success.
